Questions & Answers

What is Lancaster Select Soccer?

Select soccer is instructional competitive soccer.  Players tryout for teams and are selected based on their ability, potential, desire, and attitude.  In Lancaster, the governing organization is Lancaster Select Soccer Association (LSSA).

How much does it cost?

At the present time, fees are under $175 per season. These fees include uniforms.  We do offer confidential scholarships based on financial need. We try and turn no one away due to financial challenges.  You’ll find that compared to other select organizations that our costs are very reasonable.

How does the LSSA keep costs down?

Our organization is built and operated by volunteers who love the game of soccer.  All funds raised are used strictly for the benefit of the players and the association.

How are funds raised?

We do fund raising activities in the fall and in the spring.  These may include raffles or sales activities.

How much travel is involved?

It depends on the season and what teams make up the divisions.  Typically, we play teams from Columbus, Dublin, Grove City, Hilliard, and Newark.  We have played teams from Chillicothe, Marion, and Mt Vernon.   Ride sharing for players have been very successful in the past so travel is really not an issue for our players.

When are games played?

Two games a week are usually played during the season.  Games are normally played on Saturdays and on one other evening during the week.  When there is distant away game scheduled during the week, many times the game can be re-scheduled for a weekend.

What can I expect for my son/daughter?

You should expect your son/daughter to be exposed to soccer concepts and for individualized attention by our coaches.  Your player should learn soccer team concepts and improve his/her skills every season.  Our players have been known to go on to play high school soccer and beyond.

How much time is involved?

Teams will practice three or four times a week before the season begins and then once or twice a week thereafter.

What do tryouts entail?

Tryouts are normally held in the late spring.  We normally run a number of stations where players demonstrate abilities in such areas as ball control, passing, trapping, shooting, teamwork, and defensive concepts.  Coaches will grade players and depending on performance will select players for teams.  Players who are selected will be contacted.

Do players have to commit to spring and fall?

Teams are formed for the fall and spring season so normally it is expected that once selected for fall season that players will be back in the spring.

What age groups does LSSA sponsor?

We like to sponsor U-14, U-12, U-10 Boys and Girls.  We have sponsored older teams in spring season in the past.  Age groups will depend on the success we have at try-outs.

Why should I pick LSSA over Everyone Plays?

Everyone Plays is a fine opportunity but it is exactly that, everyone plays.  LSSA players earn starting time and playing time by hard work and learning the game of soccer.  Additionally, our coaches attend training sessions and are licensed to coach by the Ohio South organization.

Are the players just from Lancaster?

No, our players come from all the communities around the Lancaster area.

Is it all just soccer?

While we emphasize competitive soccer, our association embraces the philosophy that the number one reason kids play soccer is that it is fun.  As such, we try to make sure the soccer experience is a fun one while still a challenging one.

How do you do that?

We build some activities into our program.  Each spring we sponsor a pool party for all the players.  Teams have traveled together to watch the Columbus Crew both at Crew Stadium and at the Crew practice facility at Obetz.  We have had Crew players visit Lancaster and conduct clinics for our players. Teams will get together for other activities through the year as well.

What about school conflicts?

In today’s world, we know that our players are with us because they want to be with us.  Having said that, we also know that players have church, family, and school obligations.  Our coaches will work with players when these conflicts arise.  We just expect that coaches be told in advance of any schedule problems.

What about indoor soccer?

At the present time, the Lancaster Select Soccer Association is not sponsoring indoor teams.  We may be looking at that in the future.

What is MOSSL?

MOSSL stands for the Mid Ohio Select Soccer League.  We are one of the associations comprising the league.  You can find out more about MOSSL on the ColumbusSoocer.com web page.

What is the Ohio South Youth Soccer Association?

Ohio South is the governing body that MOSSL is a member organization to.

How are coaches selected and trained?

We expect the highest code of conduct for our coaches.  Coaches apply for consideration and serve at the direction of the LSSA Board of Directors.  Coaches normally serve as assistants before becoming head coaches.  All coaches are expected to obtain the necessary licensing credentials and to upgrade these credentials as required by Ohio South.

If I am interested in coaching, how do I get started?

Contact the LSSA President or any of the Board members for information.

How much do coaches get compensated?

Our coaches are volunteers.  They receive no compensation for coaching.  Each team receives funding for equipment as needed.

Are there other opportunities besides coaching for parents?

Absolutely!  Our association is growing.  We are always in need of volunteers to help the coaches administer teams and there are many opportunities available through the Board of Directors.

When does the association hold meetings?

We hold meetings every month.  Meeting dates, times and locations are announced on this web site and a reminder e-mail is normally sent out as well.  Any person interested in soccer in the Lancaster area is welcome to attend.

What if I want more information on LSSA?

You can contact any of the members of the Board of Directors or come to any of our meetings.  Additionally, please surf this web page as we try and keep the site updated on a regular basis.
